The tradition continues. I’ve had the new iPhone 14 Pro in my hands since Friday, but as is habit, I took a few photos on and around the National Mall. With that disclaimer of a short amount of experience with the iPhone, I have some first impressions of the cameras. As always, this is not a review. There are plenty of others that I trust for that task.
The everyday non-photographer will probably not notice the upgraded sensors, lenses, and “photonic engine” camera system, especially if they are already using the iPhone 12/13 Pro. For the pro-am photographers, it’s a different story. The new 48MP main sensor, accessible in Apple ProRAW mode, will be a minor revelation. It’s the simplicity of smartphone photography, with the options of a “real” camera for for post-processing and editing.
The JPEG photos below were converted from one RAW image and cropped using Adobe Photoshop 2022.
Shooting Apple ProRAW does have a cost. A few seconds are required to save a RAW image. The burst mode and video recording options are available when the camera is set to RAW, however, the photos will be JPEGs.
The other features of the iPhone are a useful evolution. The Dynamic Island is an interesting feature, that’s not all easy to demonstrate. The always-on display is amusing, as we’ve all become accustomed to glancing at our phones when they light up.
More photos from this weekend are below. This will be a fun camera to use.
